Studio Joris de Groot X Knit in Motion
Welded Loop is a collaborative project of Knit in Motion (Suzanne Oude Hengel) and Studio Joris de Groot. Together, they unlock the potential of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) combining knitting, welding, and 3D printing techniques to develop innovative design solutions. Aiming to create fully TPU-based footwear, the designers explore how these techniques can merge into a sustainable and recyclable product that maintains the functionality of traditional shoes. For the development of the outsole, they joined forces with footwear designer Josef Trojan (Concept Crafter) to explore new possibilities.
After Suzanne and Joris developed a method to construct an entire shoe from TPU, their research expanded into other accessories, such as bags, using the same innovative techniques. At Dutch Design Week 2025, they will present the ongoing process of the Welded Loop project, showcasing tests, prototypes, and surprising outcomes that highlight the material’s potential. Using the factory floor as their playground, the designers work hands-on with machines, rethinking conventional production methods and pushing boundaries in new innovative directions.
