Other Characters / An Alphabet of Shapes
Other Characters explores Indian block printing as a language between cultures. A single traditional motif is transformed into a modular system, forming a new visual vocabulary of 100+ characters – readable and abstract. Selected characters are hand-printed with archival wooden blocks, numbered to match their place in the alphabet.
Other Characters combines the essence of block printing – repetition – with an experimental use of stencils, allowing the strict linear structure to take on soft, geometric forms. The work explores how traditional visual systems can be reinterpreted in new contexts, reflecting an underlying complexity and inviting a different way of seeing.
