STRATA
STRATA is a textile collection by Kaustik Studio that explores geological formations, erosion, mineral deposits, and the passage of time through material, colour, and texture. The project translates the layered appearance of the earth into hand-tufted textile pieces made with natural wool and carefully developed variations in pile height.
The collection combines contemporary textile design with natural dyeing processes carried out in collaboration with Casa Bartolo. Plant-based pigments and locally sourced materials create subtle, irregular tones that make each piece unique. These variations are not treated as imperfections, but as traces of the organic processes behind the work.
For Dutch Design Week 2026, KAUSTIK Studio presents STRATA I, a piece inspired by pale geological strata interrupted by deep orange mineral accents and gradual colour transitions. The orange wool is dyed using cempasúchil, a flower deeply connected to Mexican culture. Through this encounter between landscape, craftsmanship and experimentation, STRATA reflects on transformation, memory and the relationship between natural matter and contemporary design.
