Dutchoiserie: In Translation

Dutchoiserie: In Translation explores what happens when objects, images, and traditions move between cultures and when translation remains incomplete.

From chinoiserie to Dutchoiserie, the project analyses how worlds are constructed from fragments. Bringing together porcelain, glass, and embroidery, familiar Chinese and Dutch visual languages are borrowed, distorted, and recombined as cultural forms shift between materials and contexts.

Rather than seeking accurate translation, Yicheng Geng approaches misreading and misunderstanding as productive methods of making – a space where new forms, stories, and relationships can emerge. Each object exists in an in-between state: translated, but never fully resolved.

Presented at Dutch Design Week, In Translation asks how cultural objects might acquire new identities when inherited meanings are taken apart, exchanged, and assembled again.
