Digital Camouflage

DIGITAL CAMOUFLAGE is an innovative wearable art project by artist Simon Weckert. Developed as a response to AI-powered video surveillance in public spaces (such as Berlin’s Kottbusser Tor), the project explores the intersection of privacy, technology, and public space through a custom-designed garment designed to act as a physical shield against machine vision.

Unlike traditional military camouflage meant to hide individuals from the human eye, this garment employs a technique known as an “adversarial attack” to deceive object-recognition algorithms. The textile pattern is designed to initially attract the algorithm’s attention, only to present a visual structure within which the system cannot recognize anything. By disrupting these machine-readable patterns, the garment can prevent the AI from detecting the wearer as a person.

DIGITAL CAMOUFLAGE serves as both a functional countermeasure and a provocative critique of modern surveillance infrastructure, highlighting the vulnerabilities of automated monitoring while reclaiming individual anonymity in an increasingly observed urban environment.
