Explore Express is a selection of my findings from bringing my black-and-white illustrations into the world of colour. When I was young, I felt that writing a diary was too private and vulnerable. What if someone found it? Instead, I would draw about my day and my thoughts in a way that no one else would understand. These drawings hold a lot of memories and have become an important part of my visual language. By bringing colour into these originally black-and-white illustrations, I’m giving them a new context and a different life. Exploring these possibilities shows me how differently the same illustration can feel, while helping me develop my skills and deepen my understanding of colour and composition.
Malin Åkerblom is a Swedish illustrator and visual storyteller based in Amsterdam. With a background in surface design, she works across illustration, graphic design and visual storytelling. Through Malinworks, she collaborates with brands to turn ideas into considered visuals, often for product and interior design.
